MOSAICS IN KAWAKAWA

Kawakawa is famous for its Hundertwasser toilets.
Hundertwasser was born in 1928 in Vienna. From an early age he showed a talent for an unusual use of colour and shape. His first exhibition was in 1952. He travelled extensively throughout his life, visiting New Zealand many times. His connection to Kawakawa and Northland comes from a 2 month stay in hospital in Kawakawa due to an accident.
He began construction of the Kawakawa toilets in 1999.
Hundetwasser died in February 2000 and is buried on his land in Northland.

In keeping with the mosaic tradition of Kawakawa some public works have been created, including this lovely armchair.
