Community Mosaics in Chile
I have always loved the painted "power boxes" that appear on our streets. A great way to add some vibrancy to an otherwise drab utilitarian object in our community. Occasionally one sees a community mosaic too which are always fabulous. Unlike the painted power boxes the mosaics will last forever - that is one of the beauty's of mosaic. As you probably know too, mosaic projects do take a long time to make and this is probably why we don't see so many of them. However read on to find out how one man's dream of gifting something bold, permanent and a daily reminder of what makes his city special came to fruition.
In 2011 the Mayor of Puente Alto in Chile decided he wanted to transform a drab, graffiti covered concrete metro station into a thing of beauty that depicted what was special about his city. He commissioned Isidora Paz Lopez who transformed 4,000 square metres across three metro stations, 83 track support pillars and kilometres of concrete wall lining the tracks into a natural history museum that educates and inspires a population.
With a team of over 100 artists she created natural scenes including insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, flowers, herbs, cacti, people. Not only did the mosaics transform the area but they had a tremendous influence on the people in the community too. Where once the area had been unappealing, just a place to pass by as quickly as possible, the area became a draw card for the community. People came to admire the work and to be inspired. Some going on to create their own mosaics at home. This community is now proud of it's heritage and proud of it's mosaic art.

Classes
The May class was held in Pt Chevalier and was attended by a wonderful group of women - we all had a great day and fabulous mosaics were created.
The fast approaching cold, wet winter months inspired several of these women to try their hand at mosaics so they could while away the indoor hours whilst creating something of beauty for their homes, family and friends.
Perhaps you too are looking for something to fill in the hours during our winter months. Why not come along to the next class being held in Birkenhead on Saturday 26th July and learn the basics of mosaic. You will then have the confidence and know how to continue at home. Specialist Class

I am planning on running a class to teach the method of creating a tapestry mirror.
These mirrors are made using glass, copper wire and beads and are inspired by the textiles of the Rajasthani area in India, using different colours and shapes.
The class would need to be over two days - probably consecutive weekends - and will only run if I receive enough interest in them.
If you are interested in attending this class please email me: [email protected]
